Within the Melbourne CBD there are multiple WIFI hotspots, some easy to use others require some kind of login, the 3 that I used most often when I arrived were.

Food Inc, which is wireless provided in the food court in Melbourne Central Shopping Center, above the train station. The closer you are to the food court the stronger the signal.

Australia on Colins, which is wireless provided in the food court in Australia on Colins shopping center. As far as I can remember I had to login but it was no big problem. Read more
