Squeezed from soft warm, mayonnaise like brain of Everhardt
One of the first things that freaked me out when I got to Melbourne was the price of food in those small conveninece stores. They dont stock enough to be cheap and I thought I would have to move home because everything is sooo expensive (My girlfriend on the other hand doens’t panic as quickly about these things and pointed out that we were looking for food at about 1am on a saturday after our flight arrived late….)
Luckily we found a few supermarkets in the city, all pretty close to the backpackers that is housing you.
Safeway. QUEEN VICTORIA VILLAGE QV Village,Cnr Lonsdale & Swanston St, Melbourne, VIC 3000. Phone: (03) 9663 5181 A nice generic supermarket.
Big W. QUEEN VICTORIA VILLAGE QV Village, Cnr Swanston & Lonsdale Streets MELBOURNE VIC 3000. Phone (03) 9650 7355 Situated in the same center as Safeway but catering more to people wanting hardware like TV`s VCR`s and other cheapish department store stuff.
Coles. Elizabeth Street - Flinders station end. A nice generic supermarket.
IGA Express. Flinders Street, between Elizabeth st and Degraves Street. A nice generic supermarket.

Actually one of my fav food stores in the city, its underground and quite big, caters to all my food needs (well most) the deli isnt little and their prices are quite reasonable, also they have a bottle store and stay open till late on most nights.
Don’t forget about the Aldi super market @ Franklin corner Swanston St. in the north of the city for chaep veggies and fruits…and while you are there check out the Victoria Market which is just around the corner!
Thanks for the tip Martin, we also love the Vic Market too and do most of our shopping there, it will be the subject of a big post coming soon!
