One of the first things that freaked me out when I got to Melbourne was the price of food in those small conveninece stores. They dont stock enough to be cheap and I thought I would have to move home because everything is sooo expensive  (My girlfriend on the other hand doens’t panic as quickly about these things and pointed out that we were looking for food at about 1am on a saturday after our flight arrived late….)

Luckily we found a few supermarkets in the city, all pretty close to the backpackers that is housing you.

Safeway. QUEEN VICTORIA VILLAGE QV Village,Cnr Lonsdale & Swanston St, Melbourne, VIC 3000. Phone: (03) 9663 5181   A nice generic supermarket.

Big W. QUEEN VICTORIA VILLAGE QV Village, Cnr Swanston & Lonsdale Streets MELBOURNE VIC 3000. Phone (03) 9650 7355  Situated in the same center as Safeway but catering more to people wanting hardware like TV`s VCR`s and other cheapish department store stuff.

Coles.  Elizabeth Street - Flinders station end.  A nice generic supermarket.

IGA Express. Flinders Street, between Elizabeth st and Degraves Street. A nice generic supermarket.

In the CBD on Flinders lane,  between Elizabeth St and Swanston St there are 2 little alleyways called Degraves St and Centre Place, and on these little laneways there are plenty of neat little cafes and and cool little shops, the reason I am writing this is that on Degraves/Center Pl there are a couple of coffee places that will sell a coffee and acroisant for $5 or there about, so a cheap tasty breakfast with coffee for under $5. thats pretty cool.  Melbournians are big on their coffee and if you are too then these laneways are a must!

Cheap Dumplings on Tattersals Lane in Melbourne CBD.

Awesome and very fast, on busy night (Thurs - Sat) they get you in and out asap. BYO is a bonus but their beer is pretty cheap. Its the fast hot tasty food that gets you though, try Chili Oil Dumplings and the Steamed Veges.

An essential for all Melbourne visitors/residents alike.
