At the far end of Elizabeth St in the CBD, there lies one of this cities most fantastic rubies hidden in the dust, the Vic Markets, fantastic food, a friendly fast paced atmosphere and lots of sellers yelling prices and praise for their products into the air. My favourite place is the meat market, Im by no stretch of the imagination remotely related to vegetarianism, and the meat here is awesome. There is a fresh fruit and veges section for those inclined including an organic market and across the road in the upper market offers more fruits and vegetables on a Saturday, replaced by leather and goods on Sundays.

On the corner of Elizabeth and Therry St this is where the markets begin and this is where the good food smells punctuate your hunger, its bad, but so good, coffee roasted on site, dried meats and a variety of cheeses, small stalls selling grains and spices, nuts and oils and cheeses and malts and im going to pass out…. Within the Melbourne CBD there are multiple WIFI hotspots, some easy to use others require some kind of login, the 3 that I used most often when I arrived were.

Food Inc, which is wireless provided in the food court in Melbourne Central Shopping Center, above the train station. The closer you are to the food court the stronger the signal.

Australia on Colins, which is wireless provided in the food court in Australia on Colins shopping center. As far as I can remember I had to login but it was no big problem. (more…)

One of the first things that freaked me out when I got to Melbourne was the price of food in those small conveninece stores. They dont stock enough to be cheap and I thought I would have to move home because everything is sooo expensive  (My girlfriend on the other hand doens’t panic as quickly about these things and pointed out that we were looking for food at about 1am on a saturday after our flight arrived late….)

Luckily we found a few supermarkets in the city, all pretty close to the backpackers that is housing you.

Safeway. QUEEN VICTORIA VILLAGE QV Village,Cnr Lonsdale & Swanston St, Melbourne, VIC 3000. Phone: (03) 9663 5181   A nice generic supermarket.

Big W. QUEEN VICTORIA VILLAGE QV Village, Cnr Swanston & Lonsdale Streets MELBOURNE VIC 3000. Phone (03) 9650 7355  Situated in the same center as Safeway but catering more to people wanting hardware like TV`s VCR`s and other cheapish department store stuff.

Coles.  Elizabeth Street - Flinders station end.  A nice generic supermarket.

IGA Express. Flinders Street, between Elizabeth st and Degraves Street. A nice generic supermarket.
